The 2023 State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) report provides the most comprehensive annual data available on the status of Black homeownership in America. The report shares that while African Americans in 2023 are gaining in significant areas they continue to face substantial obstacles when seeking to purchase a home.

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) commissioned the first SHIBA Report in 2013. The comprehensive report provides a detailed view into the real-life statistics that impact and impede Black families from realizing the dream of homeownership.  The 2023 SHIBA report serves as a guiding light for NAREB and the nation as we strive to implement strategic policies and address systemic barriers to homeownership and generational wealth.  View the 2023 SHIBA Report

Report topics include:

  • Black wages and wealth
  • Housing affordability and inadequate housing supply
  • Climate change and black homeownership
  • Home Mortgage Loan Disclosure Date
  • NAREB’s policy priorities and recommendations
  • Recent NAREB successes to increase black homeownership
  • 2024 NAREB Mid-Winter Conference and Building Black Wealth Tour in Charlotte

The purpose of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers® is to enhance the professional and business conditions of NAREB® Realtist® members by strengthening the consumer capacity of Black, minority, and emerging target market segments that Realtists® serve.  NAREB promotes the real estate industry in general, utilizing economic, political, legal, and social leverage to remediate disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices prevailing in the United States.
